When thinking about start-up strategy, one would think that entering a crowded market might be foolhardy. The problem is that every market today seems crowded, and most technology entrepreneurs are instead looking for new angles on existing markets and pondering how to differentiate.

MetaLab specialises in application user interfaces and worked with Slack to help the company win in real time messaging. In this article MetaLab founder, Andrew Wilkinson, talks about how Slack carved out a market in messaging against established players that had ‘solved the problem’. There may be lessons here for every application startup.
