The use of Linear Programming (LP) to identify optimal solutions for a mine production schedule is a powerful yet under-utilised method for improving project value.

This paper explores a laterite nickel mine case study of a production schedule that optimises the net present value of an integrated mine network of mining areas, roads and waste dumps.

Commercially available mixed integer linear programming software has been used to model the data and the production constraints. The LP model simultaneously considers the optimal mining sequence, haul road and waste dumping sequence while maximising the project (NPV).

This integrated approach to mine scheduling effectively bridges the gap between tactical and strategic mine planning and ensures that a mine production schedule is both feasible and optimal.
